Application

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to assist with altering, repairing and maintaining costumes for productions in the screen, media, entertainment and events industries.

At this level, individuals are required to use some discretion and judgement and operate under broad supervision within an established framework of plans and procedures.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Complete simple costume alterations

1.1 Set up and adjust equipment and work station according to workplace procedures and construction requirements

1.2 Use appropriate and compatible equipment and accessories

1.3 Complete simple costume modifications and alterations according to requirements for quality, efficiency and personal safety

1.4 Inspect sewn pieces and take action to rectify faults found

2. Undertake repairs

2.1 Assess costumes and liaise with relevant personnel to determine requirements for repairs

2.2 Follow correct procedures for preparing to repair costumes, materials and equipment

2.3 Complete repairs to restore costumes to optimum condition

3. Clean or launder, press or otherwise service costumes

3.1 Inspect costume components and determine appropriate clean or launder, press or service process

3.2 Identify and rectify any faults, spots or marks using appropriate equipment and treatments

3.3 Clean or launder and press costumes according to care instructions for fabrics, ensuring that delicate or problem fabrics are treated with care

3.4 Make necessary arrangements for the special laundering or dry cleaning of costumes

3.5 Document the dispatch and collection of costumes

3.6 Label, code and store costumes according to workplace and production requirements

3.7 Complete documentation according to workplace or production requirements

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

  • provide examples of finished costumes that have had a size adjustment and a simple style modification
  • use techniques to repair and restore costumes to optimum condition
  • use different repair and maintenance techniques for different types of fabrics and costumes
  • follow safety procedures when using sewing machines and other equipment.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided for each of the above points at least once.

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements the individual must:

  • describe cleaning agents and the effect they have on a range of fabrics and materials
  • describe costume repair techniques and how to apply them
  • describe different roles and responsibilities of people working in a wardrobe department
  • describe the use, properties and care of different fabrics and materials regularly used in making costumes and how they react to laundering, dry cleaning or spot cleaning
  • provide examples of typical labelling and storage systems for costumes.

Assessment Conditions

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to costumes in need of modification, repair or maintenance.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
